Post-Apocalypse?

Just in case the interpretations of the Mayan calendar are wrong and the world doesn't end tomorrow ... why not get your teeth into some gritty post-Apocalyptic fiction.  The following list with survival tips has been compiled by Alison Flood of The Guardian:

The Day of the Triffids: don't look at the sky
The Road: carry antibiotics
Oryx and Crake: watch out for those dastardly pigeons
Cell (on order) : put down your mobile phone

New computer system coming soon...

Next week, Timaru , Temuka and Geraldine Libraries are changing to a new computer system called Kōtui. From 5pm Monday night, through to closing on Wednesday, library services will be limited.
We won’t be able to lend, renew or reserve items, or join new members – but we'll be open for returns, looking at the collections, browsing collections and for free internet and wifi. We'll be back to normal again on Thursday.
We're also getting new front doors fitted next week. Look for the signs and balloons to direct you to the Church St side door while the new front doors go in. The returns slots have moved to the Bank St carpark side of the library, and you can use them any day, any time :-)

My Review For The Chronicles Of Egg: Deadweather and Sunrise
By Angela Seyb - age 11
My Rating: *****

I think that The Chronicles Of Egg is an intriguing and exciting book that draws you into it with an amazing amount of curiosity and anticipation building throughout reading the book. This book is the first of a new series starring courageous children and pirates who are not all who they seem. Join Egg Millicent and Guts as they start to unravel the mystery of a lost treasure belonging to a mysterious king. I can NOT wait until the next book comes.

Guest Review: The Power of Six

My review for The Power of Six
By Gina Seyb
Rating: *****
Age groups that might enjoy it: 11+ and my Mum
I think that ‘The Power of Six’ is an EXCELLENT book. This is the second instalment to ‘I am number 4’, the story is told by two people, Marina AKA number 7 and John Smith AKA number 4. This book starts off in Spain where a girl named Marina is hiding from the bloodthirsty alien Mogadorians. She has heard rumours about a “terrorist” wreaking havoc in Paradise, Ohio and suspects that he is one of her own people from the devastated planet Lorien. Meanwhile John Smith has just fled Ohio and is again on the run, along with Sam Goode and number 6. This book is action packed and introduces more characters each with their own intriguing stories to tell.
I really enjoyed the suspense and the fact that it switched between two different people. I could NOT put it down; the storyline entwines amazingly and continues smoothly, telling you a few more things that you wouldn’t even know about in the first book. I love the fact that the magic and power is mixed in with reality too because it makes it seem realistic and powerful. Roll on Book 3.
I hope that ‘Pittacus Lore’ keeps writing more fantastic books.

Hunger Games

Vampires and paranormal are so last year... dystopian novels are what's hot in 2012.
Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen regards it as a death sentence when she is forced to represent her district in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV. But Katniss has been close to death before--and survival, for her, is second nature. The Hunger Games is a searing novel set in a future with unsettling parallels to our present. Welcome to the deadliest reality TV show ever...
Reserve a copy and read it before the movie release in March!
